Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award
Purpose
The purpose of the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award is to initiate and support post-Ph.D.,-M.D. or -M.D./Ph.D. postdoctoral fellows at research institutions across the United States, who are judged to have the highest potential for success in an academic career in chemistry and the life sciences, and who will become the next generation of leaders and innovators in science, engineering, and technology. It is the Foundation’s intent that the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship will be the catalyst to aid in the fellow’s transition to an outstanding, independent research career.
Naming
Recipients of the award shall carry the name: “Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellow” alone and not in conjunction with any other name. Recipients may not hold any other fellowship during this award period.
Duration of Support
- The fellowship term is for two 12 month fellowship years, with the possibility of renewing for a final, third year of funding;
- Arnold O. Beckman Postdoc Fellows must be mentored throughout the term of the award, devote 100% of their effort to the project outlined in the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows application, meet regularly with their sponsoring faculty mentor.
- Recipients of the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award may not hold another postdoctoral fellowship at the same time.
Award Amount
The award will range from $57,000 – $67,000, based on years of relevant postdoctoral research experience at the time of application, with funding provided for a stipend and research expenditures. Please see the chart for exact funding levels.
- Relevant doctoral experience at the time of application may include research experience (including industry), teaching assistantship, internship, residency, clinical duties, or other time spent in a science-related field beyond that of the qualifying doctoral degree.
- Approximately 75% of the award will be used towards the stipend, which may be supplemented from other sources and 25% will be used towards research expenditures.
- Research Expenditures may include, but are not limited to: travel to scientific meetings, journal subscriptions, books, computers, training courses, lab supplies, and equipment.
- The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation does not provide for overhead or indirect costs.
- Award funds are progressive, with step increases from one year to the next.
- Institutions are to provide funding for overhead and administrative costs as evidence of their commitment to the Fellow; fringe, which is considered a direct cost, may be applied to the fellowship.
- Award recipients may obtain funds from other sources for research in the same or similar areas as that conducted under this award, so long as there is no conflict with meeting the terms of the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award.
- The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation anticipates supporting twenty Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows in 2016.
- No more than two applicants from any one institution will be selected for the award in a particular program year.
