Guidelines for Independent Research Project/Senior Thesis Requirement
Students who choose to use their junior paper or senior thesis research to satisfy the independent research/thesis requirement of the Minor must notify the Minor program manager and receive approval from the Minor director of the topic no later than Dean’s date of the fall semester of their junior year for the junior paper and senior year for the senior thesis. Students should follow their department’s guidelines and deadlines for the junior paper or senior thesis.
Students who choose to satisfy the independent research project requirement of the minor by completing a final report based on work done during an Andlinger Center summer internship or completing a paper based on work done during an independent research project should follow the following guidelines:
The report/paper should:
- be 10-15 pages in length, 12-point type, double-spaced
- include a cover page with the title of the project, student’s name, the date submitted, the supervising faculty member’s name, and the statement “Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Minor in Sustainable Energy.”
- Contain the following sections as they apply to your particular research project. Not every section will apply to every project:
- Research question(s) posed/objectives/specific aims
- Approach/methodology/how you investigated the question
- Breakthroughs/findings/conclusions
- Impact of the research/suggested future research
- References
Students who choose to do a final report based on an Andlinger Center summer internship must notify the Minor program manager and director no later than August 31st of the summer they participate in the internship. The final report is due no later than Dean’s date of the fall semester of that same year; one copy to the supervising faculty member for review and sign off and one copy to the Minor program manager.
Students who choose to do a paper based on an independent research project supervised by an Andlinger Center or Andlinger Center-affiliated faculty member must notify the Minor program manager and director no later than fall semester Dean’s date of the year in which they plan to do the research. Before beginning the independent research project, students must receive approval of the topic as appropriate for the Minor from the Minor director. The independent project paper is due no later than Dean’s date of the spring semester of the year in which they do the research; one copy to the supervising faculty member for review and sign off and one copy to the Minor program manager.
Students must present their independent project/thesis research to faculty, administrators and fellow students at an annual symposium held in the spring either in their Junior or Senior year.
